The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the DHR or the Darjeeling Toy Train, is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal. Built between 1879 and 1881, it is about 88 km (55 mi) long and climbs from about 100 m (328 ft) above sea level at NJP to about 2,200 m (7,218 ft) at Darjeeling, using six zig zags and five loops to gain altitude. Darjeeling Toy Train is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered to be one of the finest engineering feats of its time. It was also one of the first railways in India to be built using steam locomotives, and many of these locomotives are still in use today.
The special features of the Darjeeling Toy Train are its UNESCO World Heritage Site status, showcasing its cultural significance, and its engineering marvel of navigating the challenging terrain of the Himalayan foothills with narrow-gauge tracks and steep gradients.
The Darjeeling Toy Train is called so due to its small size, charming appearance, and nostalgic appeal, resembling a toy-like train that adds to its unique and endearing character.
Gillanders, Arbuthnot, and Company were hired to construct the line, and by March 1880 the track was laid as far as Tindharia, and Lord Lytton, the first viceroy to visit Darjeeling, rode to Tindharia on the train.
There are 18 rides on the Darjeeling-to-Ghoom route. They run from 7.40 am to 4.30 pm.
